Ok, This is Ryan, owner of the Panther, and for once I bring some wisdom to the Windy Blog.
We got our kitten at 7 weeks old from a very nice lady up the road. She told us she had already given Cleo worming tablets and we should give her more in a week.
During our first week Cleo was really lively, but didnt seem to have much of an appetite. We figured she might not be ready to be away from her mum yet or she just didnt like the brand we were giving her. Anyway, about a week in, she threw up on our new rug (where else!) and then became very quiet and purred constantly. We googled and found out that constant purring can indicate that a cat is in distress so we were quite worried.
I got up in the night to check on her and found her staggering around the kitchen looking really poorly. So we took to the 24 hour vet and left her there overnight. We picked her up the next day and she was fine, I wasnt so fine when I had to pay the 240 pound vet bill though. The vet couldnt really tell us what the cause was, but he told us Cleo was dehydrated and possibly had low blood sugar after being sick, making her stagger. Because we hadnt actually given Cleo any worming tablets ourselves we didnt think to mention it to the vet.
Fast forward a week, Christmas Day, and we gave Cleo some worming treatment. And she throws up under the Christmas Tree and shortly after starts the purring continually and looking poorly.
However this time I have my Grandad with me, who knows his animals and tells us that the worming tablets are too harsh for a little kittens stomach. Obviously the chemicals are designed to kill worms but its still putting something nasty into your cat or kitten! He also advised that a poorly cat will drink cooled down boiled water (if that makes sense) much more readily than tap water when they are ill, allowing them to rehydrate. And if they dont wanna drink it you can squirt it into them using a syringe!!
Anyway the moral of my tale: be wary of giving your kitten worming tablets cos it might not agree with them!! Leave it until theyre a bit bigger!! Oh yeah... 24 hour vets a flippin expensive!!!
